School starts in just a few weeks but the summer harvest is still in full swing. Corn, melons, tomatoes and berries are just a few of the things you'll find at the market this weekend. Picklopolis will be back this weekend as well as Stephens Farm. The fresh vegetable source of Picklopolis, Lilly's Blooming Acres, makes its Hillsdale Farmers Market debut this weekend. See you on Sunday!

What's at the Market this week?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tomatoes are coming on strong. Early Girls, Oregon Stars, Beefsteaks and cherry tomatoes are the most readily available. The heirloom tomatoes are coming in later than last year thanks to the wet spring but are still available. There's plenty of corn available too. Keep an eye out for Jubilee, a very popular and late maturing variety. Cucumbers, summer squashes, pole beans, carrots, beets, eggplant, lettuce, spinach and potatoes will be plentiful too. And let's not forget peppers. In color and varieties, peppers will be plentiful this weekend. Fresh shell beans arrive this week. Borlotto vivenago and saluggia and cannelini will be available.
Gala apples will make their first appearance this weekend. Pears are starting to come to the market too. Look for red crimson pears this weekend. Asian pears will be available too. Peaches are in good supply and weather permitting will be available for another 4-6 weeks. Blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries should be in good supply. Last but defintely not least, watermelons of every kind(yellow, red, seedless you name it) cantaloupes and asian melons will be plentiful this weekend.
We have had many new volunteers helping at the Market since May. I especially want to thank those Robert Gray, Jackson, Hayhurst-Odyssey, Wilson and Benson students who have volunteered at the Market this season. These students helped with customer counts, assisted vendors and helped customers get their purchases to their car. Parents, if you have a child looking for volunteer opportunities, stop by the Information Booth on any Sunday. We have many volunteer slots available. We need adult help too. Why not give us a hand as well for a couple of hours a month? Try it, you will like it. Talk to volunteers about what fun it is to be here helping at your Community Market! Contact Joan, Volunteer Coordinator, at 245-0520 or volunteer@hillsdalefarmersmarket.com.
Recipe - Gazpacho
With all the tomatoes coming into the market, it's time for a gazpacho recipe. A great summer soup, gazpacho is a very simple soup to make and has many variations.
The recipe is pretty simple and shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to make. With all the varieties and colors of cucumbers, peppers and squash, you can paint a colorful soup. Enjoy!
